Solar pricing: Factors to consider

  • battery icon
    Energy consumption

Determine how much energy your house consumes, then consider your goals with solar. Do you want solar energy to generate some or all of the power for your household? The amount of energy you need impacts the cost of your solar energy system.

    Electricity prices

Take a look at electricity prices in your state using past power bills for reference, and gain an understanding of your electric company’s net metering standards. This information will influence the size of your system and the number of panels you’ll need installed.

    Sunlight exposure

Consider how much sun your roof gets throughout the day. Take into account your roof type, size, and orientation. A larger roof potentially gets more sun as do south-facing roofs. Shade can also affect how much direct sunlight your roof receives.

How much can you save with solar?

  • Decreasing solar prices

It’s a great time to go solar. With enhanced technologies, greater efficiency, and government incentives, the price of solar has dropped in the past ten years, which only increases the potential to save with solar energy.

  • A cost-effective system

The average household requires a 6kW solar energy system to generate sufficient power, the price of which has decreased over the past decade. Today, the installation cost for a 6kW system runs between $15,000 and $25,000 on top of panel costs.

  • An accessible power option

Reports show that in 2018 alone solar panel pricing per watt dropped by 5%. Combine that savings with incentives and financing options and solar has become an even more viable option for homeowners throughout the U.S.

Key costs that impact solar energy pricing

Solar prices continue to drop as technologies continue to advance, making today’s solar power more efficient and affordable than ever. So what are you paying for when you customize a solar energy system for your home? The following three components  comprise the overall cost—up front and over time:

  • Operation: This includes monitoring so you always know what’s going on with your system, ongoing maintenance, repairs, and overhead.

  • Installation and permits: Professional installation ensures everything’s set up, connected, and working like it should with the necessary permits in place.

  • Equipment: You need all essential devices for your system to function properly, including solar panels, inverters, mounting hardware, wiring, and batteries.

federal solar incentives

Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (Solar ITC)

The Solar ITC is available to all U.S. residents who owe federal taxes. With it, a portion of your project costs can be deducted from your tax obligation, reducing the amount of taxes that you may owe. The credit is currently worth 26% of your project costs. In 2023, it reduces to 22%, and then expires for residential projects at the start of 2024. As an example, on a $10,000 solar project, the credit would reduce your tax liability by $2,600, which may significantly speed up your
payback period.

state solar incentives

Solar tax credits available by state

There are also state solar incentives and city-level programs available to encourage solar adoption. In most cases, state and local programs combine with the federal incentive, meaning you may save even more. Solar incentives vary among states and utility companies, and rebate levels can fluctuate. More solar pricing incentives

  • Get compensated for your energy credits: In participating states, homeowners receive energy credits known as Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs) for the solar power they produce.
  • Get a partial refund upfront with solar rebates: When you purchase a solar energy system, file for a rebate with your local government, utility company, or other organization running the rebate program in your area.
  • Get paid for your solar power production: A performance-based incentive (PBI) awards a flat-rate payout per kWh of solar energy produced by your solar panels—you get paid for the electricity you produce.
